Honda Bay: An Island Hopping Adventure Like No Other

By in Palawan Travel Guide

Known as the Philippines’ Last Frontier, Palawan is an “archipelago within an archipelago” that sits on the country’s western coast. It is home to some of the world’s most fascinating terrains, diverse marine ecosystems, distinctive cultural practices, and hospitable locals.

When talking about Palawan, we often think of destinations such as El Nido and Coron, the breathtaking Puerto Princesa Underground River, and the majestic Tubbataha Reef. Still, there is another tropical gem found in Puerto Princesa that has charmed its way to the hearts of locals and tourists alike: Honda Bay.

What is Honda Bay?

Honda Bay is a group of tiny islands off the coast of Puerto Princesa. Its name comes from the Spanish term “unda de agua,’ meaning “deep water.”

Known for its white sand beaches, sandbars, breathtaking landscapes, and diverse marine life, Honda Bay is perfect for island hopping and water activities such as swimming, diving, and snorkeling. Because of its beauty and accessibility, Honda Bay has become one of the most visited attractions in Puerto Princesa.

When to visit

It is best to visit Honda Bay during the summer and dry seasons, from November to April, to enjoy the activities and attractions. However, it is essential to note that the destination gets crowded on holidays and weekends, so you might want to visit on other days instead.

How to get to Honda bay

The main jump-off point going to Honda Bay is the Sta. Lourdes Wharf, which is located about 13 km from Puerto Princesa city proper. From there, you will take a boat ride that will bring you straight to Honda Bay.

Honda Bay’s Islands, Sandbars, Reefs

Honda Bay comprises more than a dozen small islands, but only a few are open to tourists. Aside from its islets, the bay is also well-known for its variety of sandbars and rich coral reefs.

One of the regular stops during a Honda Bay Island Hopping Tour and one of the area’s best diving and snorkeling sites is the Pambato Reef – a 16-hectare marine sanctuary. Getting to the reef will take around 15 minutes by boat from the wharf. You will be dropped off on a floating platform in the middle of the bay, where you can swim around, dive, or snorkel to witness the diverse marine life. A trip to Pambato Reef will undoubtedly serve as the perfect jumpstart to the fun day ahead.

Starfish Island is known for its 600-meter-long sandbar and the vast number of starfishes in the area. Also known as “Tabuan Island” among locals, Starfish Island has cottages where you can rest or have picnics.

Luli Island is an islet only visible during low tides. Despite this, the island is still one of the most popular stopovers for island hopping in Honda Bay. It is the ideal spot for a refreshing swim or snorkeling session. The island also has an infamous jumping board where you can do low dives straight into the sea.

Snake Island has a long sandbar reminiscent of a snake, thus its name. The island has a long stretch of white sand beach and a mangrove forest on another end. It is a well-known spot for picnics and relaxation because its coast is lined with cottages that island hoppers can use.

Pandan Island is another famous name in Honda Bay. It is an oval-shaped island near Snake Island, with spectacular reefs perfect for snorkeling and diving. You may also rent one of the island’s picnic cottages or lounge along its soft, white-sand shore.

Among the islands around Honda Bay, Cowrie Island is probably one of the most developed and commercialized. The shell-shaped island has various facilities such as picnic cottages, event spaces, massage areas, team-building facilities, and a restaurant. Cowrie Island is the most common stopover for lunch, so it usually gets quite crowded at noon.
